Getting Free Gas with Gift Cards

Tricks of Trade, Credit Cards View comments

A new Credit Card Processing loophole has recently surfaced which has allowed some people to use Gift Cards to get Free Gas.  This trick only works at a few Gas Stations and will no longer work once the Gas Stations and the Credit Card companies correct this loophole.

Gas Prices

With rising and falling Gas Prices, getting Free Gas can really help out in reducing your expenses.  So basically what you need to do is purchase one of those Gift Credit Cards from your local supermarket or drug store.

Gift Card Shelves

It will either need to be a Visa, Mastercard, or American Express Gift Card which can be used at a Gas Station just like a Credit Card.  Try to find the Gift Card with the smallest cash value possible.  I know that American Express and Visa both have a $5 Gift Card and that will work perfect for this trick.

 VISA Gift Credit Cards

Take your $5 Gift Credit Card (or higher amount) and spend all but $2 of the balance so that only $2 is left available on the card.  Go to your local Gas Station and use the Gift Card to pay at the pump.

Girl Credit Card Gas Scam

Start pumping your Gas.  See if the Gas stops pumping at $2 or continues to add gas to your car until your tank is full.

With some Gas Stations their Credit Card authorization system only checks to see if the Credit Card is valid, it does not check the available credit left on the card.  Therefore, the pump will allow you to fill your tank and will not realize that the funds are not available until it finalizes your transaction with the total purchase amount.

Girl Pumping Gas Scam

By this time your gas has already been pumped into your vehicle.  Since these Gift Credit Cards are not associated with any particular name the Credit Card company will not be able to charge you any additional funds over available Credit Limit.

This is a cool trick. I have heard about this working, but never tried it. It makes sense. I will try this soon, I have a gift card with like 5 dollars left on it.

THIS WOULDN’T WORK FOR ME, IT JUST AUTHORIZED ME FOR THE AMOUNT OF THE BALANCE THAT I HAD LEFT ON THE CARD AND NO MORE.

I can’t help but wonder where the integrity lies in this. Does it not bother those who do this to know that they are, in fact, stealing that gas/money from the company that services the card? After all, the company is required to pay the charges without regard to the fact that the money is not recoverable.

This type of fraud/theft only hurts the economy and those of us who are honest in our dealings with the world around us.

Theft is theft. Any person who is actually caught while performing a scheme such as this would be subject to criminal charges.

please mom spare us the bullshit!

i am sure that both exxon-mobile (who just posted the largest revenue in history) and the credit card companies (who gave out money for nothing - and now are paying the price) can bear the burden of giving away free gas. they are multi-billion dollar conglomerates who hoard money. people like you and me are their slaves.

anyway they have tons of money and resources and if they left this loop hole in place, its their fault and problem to fix.

i am sure they know about it.

if they haven’t fixed it by now than it’s not too important to them. besides it’s not even pennies to them. they are much bigger and larger than you could ever imagine.

they have enough oil in reserves to supply the world’s demand for years. they deserve what’s coming to them. if they left this hole open then you should be free to exploit it!

this works at my local mom & pop gas station, however i feel guilty about getting free gas from them. they are a very nice family who supports themselves with a nice local service station. i wouldn’t want to do this to them much.

but those big multinational, trillion dollar tycoon corporations deserve having this exploited especially if they have taken no measures to fix this issue. they have more money than god and hoard it all like sheep. i wouldn’t mind taking from them because they take from all of us.

That is stealing. It is a cool idea, but it is no different than pulling up to the pump, filling up your tank, and driving off. Those of you who agree with the philosophy “they have enough, they can share”, must have voted for Obama.

I am actually tired of all these major gas and credit card companies screwing people over. They make more than enough money off of us. If I could stop driving I would, but unfortunately everything I need to get to is far away.

I wish that there were more buses and subways in the USA like they have in Europe, Asia, and the rest of the world. However the special interest groups that run America want us all buying cars and using gasoline out on necessity!

For those figuring this is a cool way to get free gas and stick it to a) the credit card companies or b) the big fuel companies, consider this - one of the reasons that credit card companies charge such high interest rates is to cover the cost of fraud. They don’t pay for your theft, we do. And the big fuel companies? It doesn’t hit them at all. The gas station owner pays them for the gas whether it’s stolen or bought. “They deserve it” is nothing more than an excuse to steal, and you’re stealing from all of us.

Bullshit! Now you really don’t know what you are talking about. Credit Card companies largely base their interest rates off the current interest rate set by the Federal Reserve, your credit history, and whatever necessary to stay competitive with other lenders.

The competition among lenders is very high, thus it’s very easy to get a 0% APR Credit Card which charges no interest for the first year.

I don’t pay the interest rates, because I pay my balance off at the end of every month. Therefore I do not incur any charges and do not pay for this type of fraud.

If you don’t want to pay for the actions of others then pay your damn balance off at the end of the month!

This type of activity is just a drop in the bucket for the large credit card companies. Screw the entire lending industry. We were screwed over by them. You are paying far more for the fraudulent, unethical loans that mortgage companies issued to people than you ever will for free gas. The lenders knowingly gave out loans to people for far more money than they could ever afford and to people who could never repay their debt. This has caused far more damage and has cost you far more.

The actions of the lending industry screwed over the economy, the housing market, the lending industry, the stock market, and people’s confidence in investing in the United States.

It’s a cut-throat world, literally. You need to do whatever you can to stay one step ahead of the game. If you don’t seize an opportunity, the next person will and you will be the one who missed out!

Does there have to be $2 exactly left on the card?

no, there only needs to be a small amount left on the card. it doesn’t need to be exactly $2, it can be more or less. however this trick doesn’t work on all gas pumps and many have been changed to prevent people from doing this.

I totally believe getting gas gift card would certainly help to relief a household budget and save lots of money. I’ve spent literally few hundred a month just for gas and hoping the gas price would reduce a day.

I have written a blog spot on “make your gas gift card a truly memorable gift”
