The Low Down on Hydroponics

Medicinal Marijuana View comments

The word, Hydroponics, originated from the Greek words “hydro” meaning water and “ponics” meaning labor.  The practice has existed for thousands of years.  Hydroponic plants can be traced back to the “Hanging Gardens of Babylon” in 600 BC.

Hanging Gardens of Babylon

Hydroponics is basically growing plants in a liquid based medium using water and various nutrient solutions, but no soil.  The root system is able to grow and support the plant in various growing mediums such as gravel or rockwool.  These mediums allow the roots to gain exposure to the growing solution and provide support for the plants.

Hydroponics Roots in Growing Medium

The roots are able to absorb the nutrient solution through the growing medium.  Most plants are able to grow in this manner.  Plants grown hydroponically tend to grow faster and are stronger than plants grown in conventional soil.  Using a hydroponic delivery method you can provide a plant with the ideal amounts of the nutrients that it needs.

Soil versus Hydroponics Plants

Many people disagree over whether growing plants in hydro or soil produces the best quality buds.  Hydro is definitely the best for producing plants the quickest with the largest yields using the least amount of space, however many people feel that more potent, better tasting buds can be obtained by growing in soil.  With soil you do not need the harsh chemicals that you would use with hydro and this might contribute to a cleaner more naturally organic plant.

That would depend on the state. In Sonoma County in Northern Cali anyone with a medical recommendation can legally grow up to 30 plants. So there is zero risk.

In other states growing marijuana is a felony and can lead to some serious jail time.

So it varies greatly from state-to-state.

Canadian Prince of Pot, Marc Emery, is like the “Johnny Appleseed” of the marijuana world, he made millions of dollars mailing different strains of cannabis seeds around the world!

Don’t buy the ez-hydro set available at Sears or Macys for $150. I made the mistake of buying it and it grew plants like crap. The lighting is too weak and the watering system dries out the roots. It also broke within 3 weeks of use. Such cheap crap it is!

Ebb & Flow is definitely the best form of hydroponics. The other methods like aeroponics and with spaghetti tubes are really prone to failure.

i like that discount hydro system for just under $200, it works awesome provided you use a good set of lights with it.

well i compared the two sets of content before this article was removed and they were totally different.

this site is a blog and the other was a storefront with totally different info on the same subject matter. the only similarity was one photo.

Blah-blah-blah… My info… your info… that’s the problem with this world. Nobody wants to share anything. The whole point of writing is to pass along information. This kind of IP nonsense from Pot smokers, too. WTF? Could the world be a better place if we actually shared stuff instead of hoarding? I know… “too many people to share.” I’m sick and tired of paying gobs of money for pot, and just want to grow my own… and I’dbe happy to share it with you, too.

hydroponics seem cool, but what happens if your flow system fails and your plants go a few hours without nutrients?

i am too concerned that my system would fail or lose power and then i would be out of a decent plant.
