Get the landlords name and do a cross check with county records. If the names don't match then their may be a big red flag right there. Don't assume anything.

Yeah there would be a lot of footwork involved with this type of scam. Not to mention the fake ID's for the check cashing. The house could be rented with a fake paypal account to make it look legit. However to open a fake paypal account that requires a lot of hoop jumping and leg work. I would suspect it is much easier to get a job and make a little cash over this type of scam which if caught could lead to serious prison time. You are not breaking one law here you are breaking multiple and multiple counts at that. If caught you could be in serious shit. Think about it. It is much easier to get a job and make an honest dollar.

It is a awesome article in the fact it exposes a nasty little business. Think about your question here. How would these people recoup money stolen from them like that? It is not covered by any type of insurance. Typically people save up for deposits and the such. So it would be a big hit if someone had their money stolen in this manner.

Awesome article! This scam seems so simple, yet so effective. :-) I can totally see how people would fall for this and lose lots of money to these con-artists. I wonder what happens when they lose this money, do they just take a loss or does someone cover this type of situation?

I actually think from the scammer's point of view there's a lot of tracks to cover. Initially, to rent the home for week-end you'd have to appear legit and pay a deposit. Probably with a credit card? fake id? I would think this is probably not something you'd want to do in the town you live in so perhaps there would be air/travel involved. Again, paid for with a credit card? ID req'd for travel. Then, to cash the checks do you use a different ID? Not to mention the thumbprint and some banks require 2 forms of ID. If you can pull all of that off on a weekly basis you're probably worth $15,000 a month.
And no, I don't have any scammer experience.

This is actually a well thought out scam. It would be very difficult to catch and prosecute someone who took your money this way. First of all it would be nearly impossible to track them down and secondly it would be tough to prove anything once you did. It would be your word against theirs.

Now I know what I am doing next weekend. What a great idea!

Thanks for umm *sharing*, I mean ahh "warning* me about this scam. Just kidding! :-)

It's so unfair how some good scammers always seem to have it made, oh well, maybe one day their karma will catch up with them. :-p

Stick with a reliable property management firm that is leasing property instead of working thru some individual that you don't know. At the very least a good, established property management firm can be verified thru the city's BBB. However, it will take some responsibility from the renter to check into and research whether someone/something is legit or not.
