Two younger brothers of Sonoma County’s first Iraq war casualty are among five suspects arrested since a weekend brawl that left one man dead and three others wounded.
Matthew Timothy O’Day (above right), 19, of Santa Rosa was in jail Monday on suspicion of murder, and Rory Joseph O’Day (above left), 18, of Santa Rosa was being held as a suspected accessory to murder.
The O’Days’ eldest brother, Marine Lance Cpl. Patrick T. O’Day (pictured above), died in Iraq when his tank plunged off a bridge into the Euphrates River on March 24, 2003, five days into the U.S. invasion of Iraq. He was the first Sonoma County casualty in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
A fifth man, Donald Bittner (above right), 19, of Santa Rosa was arrested Monday and held on suspicion of murder.
Police found Benjamin Herbert Floriani dead on the living room floor when they arrived at the Blair Place town house. Three other men were wounded.
Efran Vasquez, 22, and Aniano Vasquez, 21, were hospitalized, Banayat said. Martin Ponzo, 20, was treated for his injuries and released.
It was the fourth homicide of the year in Santa Rosa, compared to six for all of 2006.

Benjamin Floriani was carrying a gun when he was stabbed. He was a small time marijuana dealer (and other drugs) and he was stabbed along with two of his buddies when this group attempted to rob them of their drugs at knife point. It was a drug deal gone bad.
Benjamin isn’t completely innocent either. If he had pulled out his gun we would be reading about how Paul Hopper and Matthew O’Day were gunned down by Benjamin in an attempted robbery. However, Paul Hopper had the knife out on Benjamin before he had a chance to pull out his gun and Benjamin carries a loaded gun, but he never has a round in the chamber. So you can imagine him trying to react by pulling out his gun and cocking the slide… this situation would force Paul to stab him to prevent himself from being shot. It was a really bad situation.
I was there but did not actually witness it first hand, but I talked to a few people who did see it.

It is not alright to bring knives to a party, however bringing a gun to a party is much, much worse.
If he really had to bring the gun for protection or intimidation then he could have kept it concealed and did not have to wave it around like he did. He was being stupid and trying to show off.
